HelloWorld was developed entirely by Ambient Design from designs and specifications by Cooperating Systems. Working together, we developed and adjusted our internal Goblin toolkit to provide support for the wide range of features needed in the application. HelloWorld was almost entirely responsible for the development of our cross platform internet and sound support, and provided an excuse for adding a wide range of features to Goblin's UI rendering system.
The visual requirements of HelloWorld called for a fast and flexible rendering system that allowed a wide range of special effects to be applied dynamically to interface widgets. Thousands of visual elements are on the screen at a time, from twinking indicators of network activity to scooting icons indicating transfers, fading flags, and images for your IM contacts. The system needed to be able to handle large amounts of animation, as the search ticker across the top of the screen is moving constantly, the tiny points of light indicating network nodes are pulsing and fading, and many user activated elements have subtle fading highlights and animation states. The result is an application that looks great, and adds a new dimension to peer to peer systems.
